Climb Newcastle News: ASBO 11 Results
The results are in for ASBO '11 - and we hope you'll agree it was another very memorable Spring Boulder Open. Nearly 200 competitors, dressed out in our ASBO '11 colour of yellow, battled it out on 35 problems in the main competition, which also acted as qualification for the evening's final. A blank canvas in the pool area gave the opportunity for some extra special problems, including the 'swinging ball' which provided great amusement, and some very technical problems this time round, with 2 mantel/grooves in particular splitting up the top scorers. We had new holds to play with too - thanks very much to Holdz for supporting this year's comp, their wide variety of holds made for some great problems.
At 8:30pm the scores were in and finalists taken to isolation. Lining up in the girls final were reigning champion Joanne Quinan and 2009 champion Karin Magog, with them Libby Barrow (USA), Becky Good (who had made the long trip from The Climbing Hangar in Liverpool with fellow Merseysiders in Jean, their very small car) and 13 year old Sid Graham. The guys final looked equally as mouthwatering with 2009 winner Nigel Callender (IRE), Yorkshiremen Martin Smith and 16 year old Nathan Phillips, local boy Paul Carruthers and two more from Liverpool, Sean Hopkins and Ged Mac. It was set for an exciting final and with fore-mentioned blank canvas the wild problems created by Chris Graham (with tweaking and testing help from Suzan Dudink and Andy Big Pipes Porter - thanks guys) looked up for the challenge.
The guys were given 5 minutes to check out the problems as a large crowd gathered in the pool, including Suzan and Andy through a laptop via video-call as they watched at home. We were off... The guys came out to a ridiculous looking problem, a volume with a ball on it, another ball, then another one, then some bright Holdz to finish - it looked like a double dyno which fooled the first couple of finalists - in fact it was more of a mantle/contortion, Martin was first to read it in 2 goes, much to the delight of the crowd, followed by Paul in 3 goes with Nige and Nathan getting the flash in impressive style. The girls came out to a tricky traverse leading to a big move to two large tufas - young Sid shocked us all by double-dynoing to the first tufa and only Libby got further, reaching the bonus but just coming short of the top.
Girls 2 was a technical number crossing the 10 degree wall to a tricky groove. Karin and Libby made it up in 4 and 6 goes respectively, with Joanne executing an impressive flash to give her the lead going into problem 3. The guys had a monster of a problem on the 30 degree board, a powerful drop onto Bertha, followed by a ruthless undercut move. Ged, Sean, Paul and Nathan did well to reach bertha but struggled to move off the undercut, Martin looked close, Nigel sensationally crushed it.
Problem 3 and the guys double dynoed and traversed the lip of the roof with the big ball as a moving foothold - a real conundrum, the more you pushed on the ball the more it moved! The guys did well, Sean and Nathan coming close, Martin battled to an 8th attempt success to take 3rd, Paul flashed impressively to take second place, and outrageously Nige made it 3 tops in 3 goes to regain the ASBO title.
Girls 3 was hard - very hard - a powerful problem on slopers on the right side of the 30 degree board - the first move spat most off but Joanne cranked through to the big finish to retain her ASBO '11 crown.
Much thanks to Mark Savage who came down to take pics which we're looking forward to seeing (check out Mark's blog about his Northumberland climbing photography book) - also thanks to Andy Long who made our great new volumes, and to the Climbing Works for lending us their big ball! Photos and video still to come...
