Climb Newcastle News: Work Begins

Work begins at Climb Newcastle

First of all some details of where Climb Newcastle will be... We are excited to announce that our centre will open late this year in the former Byker swimming pool at Shipley Place in Byker. It is a superb building for a bouldering facility and as time goes on we'll introduce you to some of its many features. Apart from its fascinating inside, it is in an ideal location, just a mile from Newcastle's Central Motorway and less than 100 yards from Byker Metro Station. If you pass Byker on the Metro look out for the old swimming pool sign high on the building as you approach from the West.

So what's been happening...? Since we got the keys we have been clearing the debris of our previous occupants. The building was last used more than 15 years ago, and while some of the stuff we are clearing up is very interesting, most of it is just plain heavy! Perhaps our major achievement to date was the clearing of our future coaching room which was formerly a public bathing area! We now have started filling, sanding and scraping our many walls and floors which makes a change from wielding around hammers and carrying more than we should!

At the weekend we had a chilled out day in Sheffield where we visited the British Bouldering Champs and did some scaff research, we even got a bit of climbing on rock done and proved we can still do a bit despite all the hard work!
